Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of matter, its properties, and the changes it undergoes. It explores elements, compounds, and chemical reactions that shape the world around us. Chemistry is essential in fields like medicine, industry, and environmental science. It helps develop new materials, medicines, and sustainable solutions for global challenges.

Bananas are slightly radioactive

Bananas contain potassium, an essential element for human health. However, a small fraction of this potassium exists as potassium-40, a radioactive isotope. While this might sound alarming, the radiation from a banana is extremely low and harmless to humans. In fact, the "banana equivalent dose" (BED) is sometimes used to compare radiation exposure levels in everyday life.

Glass is actually a very slow-moving liquid, not a solid!

Although glass appears solid, it is an amorphous solid, meaning it lacks a fixed crystalline structure like most true solids. Over centuries, very old stained-glass windows in cathedrals have been observed to be thicker at the bottom, suggesting that the glass has slowly flowed downward over time. However, modern research suggests this effect is due to the manufacturing process rather than actual flow.

Hot water freezes faster than cold water! ❄️🔥

This phenomenon is called the Mpemba effect. Under certain conditions, warmer water can freeze more quickly than colder water. Scientists are still debating the exact reasons, but possible explanations include evaporation reducing the volume of hot water, differences in supercooling, or changes in hydrogen bonding.
